Abstract

In the realm of software and hardware verification, rigorously testing systems often requires generating complex, structurally valid input models, configurations, or network topologies. Refinery is an open-source graph solver designed to automate this exact process. By combining the mathematical precision of formal logic with the expressiveness of partial graph models, Refinery enables engineers to define structural constraints and automatically generate diverse, well-formed graphs. This capability is highly valuable for verification workflows, whether for synthesizing test scenarios, analyzing distributed architectures, or systematically exploring design alternatives under uncertainty.

This short tutorial provides a practical, fast-paced introduction to the Refinery framework. Participants will learn how to define a metamodel, write formal constraints using Refinery’s logical predicate language, and utilize the solver to complete partial models. By the end of the session, attendees will understand how to leverage Refinery’s web-based IDE and underlying graph algorithms to enhance their own verification and testing pipelines with automated, constraint-driven model generation.
